Going with what others have said already. Email is not only comes off as much more professional but it's much easier to track everyone since you can make your own files for the conversations conducted.
Also you shouldn't respond with smiley faces, abbreviations, ect. It comes off as much too formal for such a serious situation. It gives off the impression that you aren't taking these customers seriously and aren't addressing their concerns appropriately.
I hope that you are able to get organized and work through the projects that are owed to these people.
