This happened to me in a similar situation. I told paypal repeatedly I only wanted x dollars (x being the total minus the worth of work completed) and when they ruled for me they ruled because of the circumstances the entire amount. I never was able to get the refund amount back to the artist. They tried to close their paypal after the claim went through to try and avoid the claim(since they had withdrawl the funds immediately and the account was empty), but that didn't work of course. So I have the full refund and they have no paypal. So their 'friend' who allegedly actually owned the paypal account wanted the refund sent to them but not through any paypal means because he didn't want the refund getting eaten by the money owed from the refund. They wanted a money order but refused to pay for the international money order. I said I'd be happy to send the money order for the refund amount minus the cost of the mail order itself but that was only a few dollars. Or to wait for them to settle their paypal account so I could send the money back in it's original form. I never heard from the 'friend' or the artist again.

Not a great feeling :/, now I have a sketch and a full refund, but there was nothing I could do. I offered to send the money back in any way that I didn't end up taking a loss on, they just disappeared.
All I can do now is not use the sketch in any way and hope that the artist who disappeared and left their 'friend' holding the bag can reuse it somehow and pay off part of the refund price.

There were other issues, the whole thing was a scammy mess, but to stay just on topic- I explained three times to paypal I only wanted the x amount if the claim ruled in my favour, but they still gave me the entire thing. I hope you can stay in touch on strictly professional terms with the artist to send an amount back for the image you did get, but if the artist doesn't contact you at all, that's tricky.

Do they have a clear price list? So you can just send that amount back and if they silently accept it, they accept it and you know you at least did the right thing.
