Question related to the Syrae thread.

With the Syrae thread devolving into a copyright war of words, I figured it was time ask this question. I separated it from the Syrae thread since it might be useful for both artists and commissioners to take note of this discussion.

What are the rules of the land as far as commissioned artwork involving the commissioner's character(s)? I would assume that the commissioner has some recourse when dealing with works involving his/her characters, and the artist has some recourse available by default, but who has the final say as to who can do what with the finished product, in terms of alterations, etc? What kind of timeframe should a commissioner hold for approaching the artist for changes, and when would it be a DIY case?

I'm not talking about generic artwork commissions, I'm speaking of commissions involving characters whose "existence" predates the artwork being commissioned.

The way some of these people feel about $25 commissions, I sometimes think that the artist should be careful to include a note that it won't be drawn in the artist's own blood.

Sadly I saw a post for art t'other day where it WAS drawn in the artist own blood.

O-K then.

Part of me wonders what kind of blood, but most of me doesn't want to know ;P
Either way, sounds like a bit of a bio hazard, not to mention extremely perishable work as blood tends to go all brown and grainy. I've never understood what drives people to use their own blood, other than wanting attention.

I seem to recall somebody showing up on a furry forum once going "I want to do art IN MY OWN BLOOD!" The desire to shock and horrify us was palpable.

So we said "Hmm, okay, probably doable. You should try mixing it with a liquid matte medium to see if you can extend the drying time, and before you open a vein, you might want to try and work with some blood from the butcher first so that you can see how it handles on the surface. Alternately, if you have a girlfriend* you might see if she can donate some menstrual blood, which will again handle differently, but might give you some idea of what you can expect in terms of drying time and coverage."

He went away and never ever came back again. Go figure.

*Anything's possible, right?

"I saw a work some time back where it was drawn in menstual blood. on a pad."

With a labia? Sounds disappointingly low effort by it's description.
But no, i saw a whole community worth of this stuff once, including laments on how poorly the stuff keeps in the fridge..

But I digress in the most unpleasant of directions. Sorry OP!
