It's still really bad form. Not only did you basically barge into a transaction that didn't involve you, you bid on an auction and won it without even clearing your proposed alternative method of 'payment' with the artist first.

Not saying that the reaction to it was justified because it certainly was not, but you were definitely in the wrong with your actions and I hope that you have learned from the mistake.
