Artist Advice: Paypal
So I'm new to the world of sellng art, as in just this week did I decide to sell adopts. I made a Paypal account, set it up from what I thought, read up about creating invoices, everything was going smooth until I made my first sell. At first it wouldn't let me accept money, so I upgraded to a business account. Things when fine after that, but I want to make sure I'm doing things right.
My first question is, should I have upgraded to a business account? I plan to sell more adopts in the future mind you.
Also What is the right way to set up an Invoice? One that doesn't expect me to ship something.

You can also set up a PayPal.me link, just go to paypal.me and it'll take you through the process.

The buyer always has the option to add a note and that note can say anything.
It definitely reduces the chances just by not requiring a subject, but don't fool yourself into thinking it's actual protection.

Just a head's up because if you get a Paypal employee who cares enough during a random audit or a dispute you may find yourself out of an account. It's not covering your ass at all because what you try to treat with your customer is not going to get you out of any obligation in your treat with Paypal, in fact you risk maying yourself look like someone who's a risk because you are trying to weasel around the rules.
I can't rent a house with a 'no pigs allowed' in the lease, and then write in my cheque memo area 'by accepting this rent you agree that I can have ten potbellied pigs'. That's facetious, you get, but just a sort of overly simplified of example of why this doesn't work.

The vast majority of porn requires no shipping, and gambling these days is mostly over the internet. PayPal wants no part of it.
It's a fairly effective way to discourage those things by making it difficult and confusing to sell anything digital.

Some sellers will write "paypal fee charge" on their invoices and then when you get the invoice, you feel really uncomfortable.
I also don't like how invoices collect addresses. I have yet to find a way to turn this off.

I have the "no shipping" / "Do not collect addresses" ticked on mine and it still emails me addresses. Weird.
From the time I've been using them, there seems to be no way to keep them from gathering address information in your email.

There IS a way to mark invoices for digital items as "shipped". The service rendered option applies for anything that the buyer receives in a digital format (the site specifically mentions things like ebooks and digital music files, etc)
As far as I'm aware, the new PayPal TOS change only affects those who use PayPal for their storefront and charge for microtransactions on things like mobile games (it specifically seems to be an option removed from the seller's choice of items theyre selling or something?).
Anyway, I hope this helps. Invoices and a business accout have been nothing but an asset to me. If you make enough via Paypal you probably should look into tax information though, since that might crop up in the future (I think if you make over a certain amount PayPal sends you tax info come tax season, don't quote me on that though)

On your main Summary page for Paypal, you’ll see all your recent transactions listed below. Once an invoice is paid, it will look like this (I’ve removed the price for privacy’s sake). What you want to do is click on Add Tracking Info, which will take you to this page. Click the drop down menu for
Order Status, and you’ll see an option at the bottom named “Order Process/Service Rendered”. This is what you want to click, to tell Paypal that you don’t need to ship anything, and it can stop worrying it’s lil’ ol’ head about things. After you click it, hit save. It will show you a confirmation page which states that your customer will get an email, letting them know that their service was rendered. Your customer may contact you wondering what the heck that email is, but hopefully in time, most of the fandom will understand that annoying step (or Paypal will remove this need altogether, who knows)
