I ship a LOT of international packages and the Paris hub is notorious for being the sucking black hole of international shipping. If it shipped to somewhere were Paris was the hub it dispatched from... urgh. It's not surprising it's taking its sweet time showing up.
I'd send him a follow up message saying: "International packages with handwritten addresses will sometimes be held for inspection or require you to come get them at the office. They SHOULD have left you a note saying they were holding it, but these sometimes get mistaken for junk mail. Please check with the post office directly in case they are holding it."
That explain clearly to him WHAT he should do, WHY you think the package might be held up, and HOW he didn't get a notification this has occurred. This is actually a pretty common situation and most often it is resolved once people actually go to the post office and ask.
