[identity profile] goatparty.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] artists_beware

I'm trying to break into the fursuit commission business, and so far I'm just selling premise bases and tails.

Seeing some recent posts here about underage people buying things and having the parent/guardian file chargeback has me worried, though.

Is it safer for me as a seller to list my items on sites like Etsy or The Dealer's Den rather than letting people buy directly from me via Paypal?

To the best of my knowledge, the only way to protect yourself is to refuse to accept credit cards and deal only with paypal balance payments.

At least at one point Paypal did allow one to restrict what methods of payment were accepted.

No matter who you do business through they won't protect you from that situation. It's all about buyer protection. The seller is on their own when it comes to buyer fraud.

It's an unfortunate part of business.
I would keep all forms of receipt/proof of shipping and logs so in case you do get a charge back, you can at least prove they got something from you. If it's a minor using someone else's card, you can still risk PayPal siding with them though.

For what it's worth, I've been selling fursuit stuff on and off for ten years, and I've never dealt with a chargeback before.

I think people would have a harder time issuing chargebacks on items that are physical rather than digital. If you have proof they received a physical item (delivery confirmation, signature required) PayPal can't just let them keep the item and the money, can they?

Another thing you can do is make sure that you Paypal e-mail matches the e-mail they are messaging you from and the address on the Paypal matches the address you're mailing to. If I get red flags like that AND the PayPal is unverified I may be inclined to refuse the transaction.
