I know it's typically standard to charge extra if someone wants to use your work commercially and the price varies based on what they want to use it for, how long, etc. I just have no idea what to charge. I know it's hard to give ballpark estimates without specifics, but maybe some ideas of figuring out the math?

Any outside references/resources would be super helpful too. I want to start branching out more with commercial stuff and I'm a huge newb at the moment.

Any help/advice is appreciate though!

I'm glad you posted this, I am having a similar case where I did a Twitter icon that took ~15 min and I charged $10 for it. Now they'd like to use for a business card logo. They are willing to pay extra, but how much extra?

FYI: I do not plan to buy https://graphicartistsguild.org/handbook linked multiples above. Can anyone link a free advice article or Can anyone share their experience they have actually had?

You can probably access the book for free from the library.

Adding in my recommendation for the Graphic Artist's Guild Handbook! Really it's the best resource out there for this kind of thing, especially if you plan on doing more commercial art.

I base my prices off the rates found in that book. A total rights buy-out is between 85% and 100% of the original commission fee for me, depending on what is being commissioned and for what purpose. Or you could negotiate a lower rate for a more limited rights transference, which often suits both parties!

Logo work tends to run several hundred to thousands of dollars at industry prices. I'm not suggesting you charge that, but you can bring it up to them if they fuss over whatever price you do decide to charge. ;)

(Not saying they will, they sound reasonable since they were upfront with you about their intentions.)
