bad work help

So recently i had got someone to do some work for me. I looked at their examples and i liked what they did. Not bad work at all. So i decided to comission them. I got them to do a pin up of my scalesona. That was last week over FA. But i had a recent event that had me not being able to pay so i asked for my work to be put on hold since i didnt have the money. The next day i get a message it was done and a demand for payment. I had looked over the work and it was ok but so many things were wrong. So i told them what all was wrong. They told me they could fix it but that suddend demand and the sudden finished work had caught me off guard. Plus i even resent the message of me not having money at the time. But they still chose to ignore it. So i told them to redo the work at least. And having been with other people who i paid to do work for me, i thought it would take a few days. But it came in the same day. The work came in even more wrong to my character and it made me upset badly. What do i do and what do i say without seeming like a jerk? I haven't payed yet so i dont know what to do.

Edit: so i did get the money and i am still demanded to pay for art that i really didnt agree on.

I would say something like, "There are still details that are incorrect, but since I am unable to pay right now, these edits can be left for later. I'm very sorry for this inconvenience and will let you know as soon as I can pay." Don't tell the artist exactly what's wrong since you shouldn't be getting them to do more work if you can't pay.

If they still don't listen and the work is that off-model, well... bullet dodged maybe?

I'm going to give a little tough-love first and say if you couldn't pay, you should not have told them to do edits expecting it to take long enough for you to come up with the money. Stringing along an artist this way is very dishonest.

That being said, it is not your fault they refused to acknowledge your message about putting the commission on hold. It sounds to me like they whipped up something half-hearted to try and back you into a corner and make you pay anyway. Taking from what ctk hullo said, I would tell them something along the lines of "The commission is not accurate to what was agreed upon and as I have already informed you I am unable to pay at this time, I am unable to accept the artwork." If you still wish to keep the commission, you could continue by asking, again, that they put your commission on hold until you are able to pay, and then you can discuss corrections. Though, personally, I would simply end the business and not go for the finished commission. I'm amazed that they would send you something and DEMAND payment without giving you a chance to check it over to make sure there were no errors. I know not all artists do WIPs, but still, this seemed incredibly unprofessional and you may have dodged a bullet (as ctk hullo also said)

You could maybe suggest that they re-sell the commission to someone else as a YCH so they can recoup the money they will lose by doing the work without reading that you couldn't pay at this time.

I see you've now said you have the money. If you do want to keep going, what I would do is re-send them the references and point out each correction that needs done in a list format. It'll (hopefully) help them check off each item as they go. Make *absolutely* sure they understand they will not receive payment until the commission is finished as agreed upon. If they cannot do so, they will not be paid, and you will not accept the commission.

But, again, I suggest ending the commission.

as others above me have said, for future reference- if the artist requires payment upon completion, it is completely fair to expect payment...upon completion. it's not a great idea to commission someone when you're not 100% sure you have the funds to do so without at least telling them upfront "hey, i want to commission you but i won't be able pay until x day" and be able to follow through with that so you're not stringing them along.

now that you are able to pay them, i would ask them to do those edits before you send payment in case they take your payment and end up stringing YOU along. >>; since the art technically isn't finished if there's things that need to be fixed, i'd say that's a pretty reasonable request. if they don't want to make edits, i'd decline the commission and suggest they resell the base sketch as a YCH, as starcharmer said.

You definitely should've been upfront about the payment delay.

That said, I'll agree that giving you a completely finished picture all at once is obnoxious, unless the commission was previously agreed on as a "wing-it" type thing. It almost sounds like they threw something together real quick after receiving your cancellation note, so they wouldn't lose out on your money.

I'm not sure what I'd do in this situation, TBPH. If the drawing is truly THAT far off what you asked for, it isn't finished. If you pay them in full now, they're going to bounce and never make the edits. I guess you could give them half of the payment now and half after the drawing is finished, or just ask if it's possible to resell the image as a YCH and walk away from each other since it's so far off your character.

If there is anyway to anonymously post the art compared to your reference maybe you can do so we can help give you advice on if it's far enough from what you ordered to pursue a further refund.

It's hard without know how much is off. You owe the artist some money, since sometimes you do get a commission that's a little disappointing(same as ordering a pizza from a new place that is exactly to your order, but not to your taste, you still have to pay for it). But if things are really wrong to the point of it being unusable to you, you can ask for further changes or get a fuether refund(with the artist hopefully able to sell the piece a YHC to be altered to the new client).

Can you describe the problems? Like:

What pose did you ask for versus what pose you actually got.
Are there important character features on your fursona the artist missed.
Is the work 'rushed' not the same quality as usual?

Also, how clear was your ref? Because the artist may have done the best they could.


(it's been mentioned already but on your end- you shouldn't have had a payment delay. If you don't have the money there and in your "hand" so to speak, don't buy.)
