As many artists are dealing with issues of people releasing their "pay only" content, I wanted to know what we could do about it to protect ourselves, as well as other artists from having the same issues.

Bascily what I want to know, is if its okay to release the paypal information of those who release "pay only" content for free on other sites? Just a name and their emails, not anything like their home address if one is listed.. I am not sure what skirts the line of doxing, or simply making other artists aware of problem customers.

Honestly I feel really bad just asking, but I think this is becoming a growing problem with Patreon and other such venues where artists are having their stuff released, and therefore harming their overall incomes.

Also, would it be better to let them know ahead of time, if they release the content, they forfit their details (again name and email only), to the net? Or is there a better resolution that I am not seeing.. Currently, Im just banning them.

I think your best bet would be just to continue as you're doing and to file DMCAs against the sites hosting your paid content.

I'm not sure of the legalities of what you want to do, but to me it doesn't sound like a good idea.

We don't allow for emails to be released. If they are, then it's prior to us asking for them to be censored.

Before we did if it was "publicly available", but we removed that because "publicly available" can be revoked at any time. :)

There are probably so many legal reasons to not release personal information that I can't track half of them. I mean heck, it's a rule here to not release personal names and PayPal information, with very few exceptions.

Remember, tit for tat, and even if they are in the wrong, they can counter release information, call you out, sue you for defamation... the list goes on.

Valid point, but you have to convince a judge of that, not them. :(

No, you can only win a defamation case if what's being said is false. That won't protect you from someone filing a case against you. I don't think that's likely in this case, but it's probably best to just avoid the whole problem.

How would you know who releases what? Usually people post on the pirate sites anonymously.

There's a few people that keep release stuff using their commonly known furry alias and brag about it.

Might be better just to make a beware on the alias then.

They don't usually sign up using their alias, they just release stuff using said alias.

Couldn't one just deduce who based off who they release from?

With Patreon's current system you can pledge, get the pay content, and then bail all within a few minutes. It'd be pretty difficult to keep track of folks, and Patreon hasn't made a ban feature as far as I know.

Well, there's lots of ways. You can do a nearly-invisible layer with the buyer's name on it or inject the data with their info. encrypted into the file. Then all you have to do is plop the file into Photoshop or run it through your encryption program to see who it originally belonged to.

Kind of a lot of work, but worth it if your stuff gets released a lot.

No. That is not okay. Just dmca, and blacklist none you catch doing it.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

This is essentially the same as giving up someone's credit card information. An email address is enough for someone who knows what they're doing to get into someone's personal finance information.

I mean, it's okay if you're giving your PP email to someone but once it gets into the hands of people who get into accounts for a living things can get ugly. Not to mention it could make the person that posted the email liable for damages.

You want to publicly release customer information.

THINK about that for a moment.

Releasing someone else's personal information is very inappropriate and it's disappointing to read that other people are suggesting you do this.

I didn't see anyone agree that this was a good idea... heh

I suppose I should have been clearer.

I was referring to what you had said earlier, not to anyone in this thread. I don't see anyone on AB advocating releasing peoples' info.

This was where I got the impression that others were suggesting it was okay.

No one has said that the OP should do this...Quite the opposite really.

The temptation may be there but it's best not to it like others have suggested. Legal reasons and possible retaliation from the customer.

Absolutely not. Everything else aside, paypal is really shitty about deadnaming trans people/not letting us change our names*, and I would lose my shit if my deadname was floating around online, regardless of why.

*FTR, you can upgrade to a business account for free, and whatever you put as your business name comes up on your transactions, although your deadname is still on your account.
