Moderator post: Tagging Entries
Feb. 27th, 2009 08:54 pmI finally have some time to start going back and tagging posts. I will work backwards from the most recent posts.
If anyone would like to see the tags I'm using, here they are:
http://community.livejournal.com/artists_beware/tag/
The list will evolve as I work my way through the entries.
Each post will be tagged with the descriptors (e.g. 'beware', 'artist') and the name of the person/company being mentioned. There will also be appropriate tags for advice and discussion posts.
As I come across posts which have been mutually resolved, I will tag them 'resolved', with no warnings about any specific party.
If you have any questions about my tags on a specific post, comment here with a link to that post. If you ask in that particular post, I won't see your question.
Feel free to suggest tags (or better wording for the tags I'm using), but please do not feel offended if I don't take your suggestions.

Date: 2009-02-28 05:02 am (UTC)By default, community maintainers can create new tags for the community and community members can add tags to entries; community maintainers must add new tags to entries before members can see or use them for entries. Maintainers can change community tag settings at the Tags Management page. If you post an entry with new tags, but do not have permission to create new tags or add existing tags, those tags will be removed from your entry.
so i guess if we want all the past entries tagged, we have to be a mod? great.

Date: 2009-02-28 05:10 am (UTC)but if i read that right... once a tag has been used, then regular members can use them, right?

Date: 2009-02-28 05:19 am (UTC)Some of the warnings are about people who are members of this community. If I allow community-wide tagging, they would be able to remove the tags on the posts warning about them.
I have set tagging permissions to moderators only, for this reason. No regular members can add tags, even ones already created by a mod. If someone feels a tag needs to be added, they can email a mod to suggest it. Or comment here, since I'm asking for suggestions. :)

good idea to keep it mods only.

Date: 2009-03-02 02:15 am (UTC)Perhaps this is some kind of crazy exception, but, when I've added tags to entries in a community in which I'm not a moderator, I've found that I'm unable to go back and remove those tags -- using either "Edit Entry" or "Edit Tags." I can erase the tag in the editing stage and hit "Save," but the tag is still there when the post is reloaded. It's a pain when you select the incorrect tag and then can't go back and delete it without contacting a mod; however, it certainly prevents the issue you're concerned about, and it allows everyone to add moderator-approved tags.
I'm not trying to get you to change your mind -- if this is what you're comfortable with, that's cool -- but I thought I'd share my own experiences with community-wide tagging and point out that you may not have to worry about people removing tags that warn against them.

Date: 2009-03-02 02:28 am (UTC)Who can create new tags and add/remove tags from entries?
Who can add existing tags to entries?
You can keep the first one "Only maintainers," since it allows the removal of tags, and you don't want members to be able to do that; you could set the second one to "Members only," and then members of the community would be able to add tags, but not be able to remove them.
Again, not trying to change your mind... just pointing out, for the record, that members technically can be allowed to add tags without being permitted to remove them. :)

Date: 2009-03-03 05:17 am (UTC)I was mainly thinking about the fact that in order to enable all members to tag posts with the person/website/company's name, I'd have to allow tag creation/deletion in addition to allowing tagging with already-made tags.
