[identity profile] kerstin-orion.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] artists_beware
I finally have some time to start going back and tagging posts. I will work backwards from the most recent posts.

If anyone would like to see the tags I'm using, here they are:
http://community.livejournal.com/artists_beware/tag/

The list will evolve as I work my way through the entries.

Each post will be tagged with the descriptors (e.g. 'beware', 'artist') and the name of the person/company being mentioned. There will also be appropriate tags for advice and discussion posts.

As I come across posts which have been mutually resolved, I will tag them 'resolved', with no warnings about any specific party.

If you have any questions about my tags on a specific post, comment here with a link to that post. If you ask in that particular post, I won't see your question.

Feel free to suggest tags (or better wording for the tags I'm using), but please do not feel offended if I don't take your suggestions.

You didn't make the tags visible.

according to the FAQ on LJ:

By default, community maintainers can create new tags for the community and community members can add tags to entries; community maintainers must add new tags to entries before members can see or use them for entries. Maintainers can change community tag settings at the Tags Management page. If you post an entry with new tags, but do not have permission to create new tags or add existing tags, those tags will be removed from your entry.

so i guess if we want all the past entries tagged, we have to be a mod? great.

but there has to be an easier way. for us to help you out. this is gonna take you a while. :(

but if i read that right... once a tag has been used, then regular members can use them, right?

good idea to keep it mods only.

Some of the warnings are about people who are members of this community. If I allow community-wide tagging, they would be able to remove the tags on the posts warning about them.

Perhaps this is some kind of crazy exception, but, when I've added tags to entries in a community in which I'm not a moderator, I've found that I'm unable to go back and remove those tags -- using either "Edit Entry" or "Edit Tags." I can erase the tag in the editing stage and hit "Save," but the tag is still there when the post is reloaded. It's a pain when you select the incorrect tag and then can't go back and delete it without contacting a mod; however, it certainly prevents the issue you're concerned about, and it allows everyone to add moderator-approved tags.

I'm not trying to get you to change your mind -- if this is what you're comfortable with, that's cool -- but I thought I'd share my own experiences with community-wide tagging and point out that you may not have to worry about people removing tags that warn against them.

Yep -- looks like my experience isn't a crazy exception, after all. ;) I just checked on one of my own communities, and the "Manage Tags" page has the following two settings at the bottom with multiple options for each:

Who can create new tags and add/remove tags from entries?

Who can add existing tags to entries?

You can keep the first one "Only maintainers," since it allows the removal of tags, and you don't want members to be able to do that; you could set the second one to "Members only," and then members of the community would be able to add tags, but not be able to remove them.

Again, not trying to change your mind... just pointing out, for the record, that members technically can be allowed to add tags without being permitted to remove them. :)

That makes total sense; I just wanted anyone else who ran across this thread to realize that your earlier stated reason for disabling community-wide tagging -- "If I allow community-wide tagging, [people who are members of this community] would be able to remove the tags on the posts warning about them" -- wasn't correct, in case others have similar concerns. =)

thank goodness! the old layout was kind of getting on my nerves, because my computer has font issues. :) the tags are way helpful, too. i have a feeling it'll be much easier to surf the community now.

How far back are you planning to go? That's a lot of archives to go through....

Is it possible to make the artists' name stand out more? Possibly by having a symbol either infront of their name, or by putting the symbol infront of the non artist tags? If not, than that's ok.

artist: (name here)
artist: (name here)
artist: (name here)
artist: (name here)
scam site: (www here)

i took another look at the contact, and after comparing it to other community tags i would suggest you use categories.

like i replied to crazy onna about. so far you only have a page and a half of tags and i bet that is gonna grow a TON by the time you finish. already my eyes are going cross trying to read them. to make them more friendly, both in searching, and in organization, i would supplement categories.

This is an awesome idea, especially as some companies that have appeared on here have been around for a long time. It would be nice to see if their current behavior is consistent with past reported behavior.
