I need a bit of help, as I'm really not sure what I should do at this point. I removed names as this isn't a beware against the person.

This person wanted to commission me for what he called a "butt icon". Basicly, it's just an icon that shows off underwear. I had lots of room for icons so he sent information to my email. I keep a work list, so I have him written down as paid. But mistakes happen, so I'm not entirely sure he has. I sketched it and sent to him but didn't get a reply for a while. So I gave him a poke on email, but noticed he was much more active on FA. I noted him there.

This is everything we wrote to each other, since I thought it might be easier then trying to explain everything: http://i54.tinypic.com/99ow2u.png

I'm not sure what to do. I can't refund him, which I would prefer at the moment, as I don't think he'll approve my updates. I can't work on the art, and I don't even know if he really did pay or not.

Any advice?

EDIT: Alright, so after listening to everyone's advice, I sent them a last note explaining I can still see history even if it's closed and if they can't give me the address, I'll have to consider it closed and not paid. They replied saying they haven't paid, so, that's that. Thank you for the help!

Just drop it, he doesn't seem interested in it anyways.

I mean, play a process of elimination here with the address.

Do you not keep track of who has paid elsewhere, perhaps in Word or something?

Here: Send out mass email to everyone who's paid since him. Whoever doesn't respond, is him.

Closed or not, shouldn't the address that was open still be listed?

Tell him that you need the adress to make sure he paid and that if he is unwilling to give the address, then you can only assume that he did not pay.

The ball is in his court and you'll either be rid of him or find proof that he paid.

That's just weird. I can't believe they'd be so unresponsive about something they bought. ^_^;
I guess ask them for a pic of their fursona and draw them a quick sketch for the money. Or as bad as it sounds, just drop it because he obviously doesn't care and isn't doing anything at all to help.

Even if the account was closed, there would be a log entry in your received payments, I don't see what the problem would be. You can check your own paypal and see if he paid you when he gives you the paypal address.

I'd ask again, if he doesn't give it then consider the matter closed.

Wanting to return the money or complete the drawing is noble, but you must know when to just quit even if they're losing out.

wouldn't hurt. Maybe if you say "I just want to check my records, please give me the name of the paypal you may have used, I can still see it even if it's closed" enough times, he might finally give it XD

That's... really odd. I would say, just send a final note - explain that if he can provide the email address that he originally used in paypal to send you the payment, you will verify and return his money. Otherwise, thank him for his time and go on your way.

Basically just let him know you'll refund him (provided he did pay, and you can confirm this) if he gives you the email address. At this stage it seems like he doesn't want to deal with it, which sometimes happens. As long as you're willing, and state it, I wouldn't see a problem.

I would agree on just dropping the commission.
The person doesn't seem concerned about it at all and you've tried to explain to them what it is you're wanting and they're not understanding the issue.

You at least tried to give them a refund, and if they don't want it you can either finish the icon how you want it or just drop it. -shrug-

I'd just drop it too.
I know you feel bad but you're not even 100% sure he DID pay you, he doesn't even remember commissioning you, and is the most unresponsive user I've seen in a while

He clearly doesn't care whether or not he receives it, and doesn't seem to understand that you want his paypal for the means of checking it, so I wouldn't bother.

Maybe send him another explicitly saying that you wanted the paypal address to check up on it so you could refund him. I'm honestly not meaning to be insulting or name calling here, but he could be a little slow for want of a better word, and you might honestly have to spell out everything. That way, you can go on with your other work, and if he ever comes back claiming you didn't deliver you have the evidence to show that you did try to accommodate him.

Just drop it. From them not even remembering, and you not being sure that he paid and him saying he didn't agree to it, it looks like the chances are pointing to you didn't even get paid. And if he's not interested in even seeing the commission finished, you're just kinda exerting effort that can be be better used on other commissioners. :/

Just for the future maybe request that your commissioners send you a note/email stating the address they are paying from. I do that automatically when I commission people so there's no confusion (I use a different email for paypal than I do for contacting people) but it's a good way to double check who's paid you or not if this ever happens again!

In this instance it really does seem like they didn't pay and don't care about seeing the commission finished.

Are you 100% positive this is the right person?

He doesn't remember paying for a commission just a little over a week ago... Plus from the short and evasive answers, he doesn't seem to know who you are either...
I admit I'd be reluctant to just give my paypal info to a stranger who'd come asking for my info so I can get a refund for something I don't recall buying in the first place, so maybe that would explain the weird reaction?

lol yeah ok, if the transaction started through FA, the chances of an error are pretty slim. :p
