Rule Reminder

This is a quick reminder for everyone to review our rules on the community info page.

One of these is "No Flames". This includes name-calling, a lot of which is happening on this recent post.

As the rules also state, deletion of posts and comments is not allowed. If you do need a comment deleted, please contact a moderator and we can screen it for you if necessary.

Outside of extreme circumstances, posts are not allowed to be deleted. If a post is deleted without moderator permission it will be re-posted from the screen-shot in our community archives. Posts may be edited as circumstances change, but the original text should remain.

In general, we have a very low level of drama and flames here. We moderators all appreciate everyone's contributions to making this a great community.

I'm going to be "That person" and just state, I don't think the vulgarities were too bad in the last post. Typical name calling of a party, well, being a huge jerk to an artist.
"We understand that this person (or persons) have upset you, but please keep personal attacks and vulgarities to a minimum."

It doesn't say we can't outright call them a no-no name. :/ Just not anything too extreme / do it too often. (Or so I am reading)

I mean, if you want them all banned. Please re-word it to a blanket ban.

I had read it all, but I have been cutting and hauling cement boarding in and out all day for our bathroom remodel, so I am super tired.
So when I hit reply, I got all lost and confused in my head, while trying to word it to not be so much of a gigantic jerk.

Guh, I remember helping my dad do their second-story office with that stuff. Stuff was heavy and tore me up. =__=

I do agree that the names weren't all that bad, and we weren't giving out official warnings, just polite reminders, so everyone there didn't get their "first strike" or anything. :)

I think in the recent post, it just 'slipped out' on people's behalf and wasn't deliberate. I know I uttered some curse words out loud when I read it. :o

But I do understand the reason for the rule. :)

It can be very hard not to just blurt out, at minimum, "what a jerk". I swear some days I need a scrolling frame across the top of FD2 and A_B that says "remember, try not to name-call" because it's so hard not to on reflex.

Just a quick question but is calling someone a white knight considered name calling? I was noted during an old post for using the term but I feel like I see it being used again with no mod notes.

That's a good question, as I haven't been seeing it as an insult, myself, more a descriptor of how someone is behaving. But I can see where it could be insulting. I'm interested in what others' think about this one. I will ask the other moderators. :)

For me, there's a difference between 'UR BEIN' A WHITEKNIGHT!!1' and 'Last thing I want is for whiteknights to come to this post...'. Whiteknight is a general term that CAN be used as an insult, and I would think it would fall under the flaming rule in those cases. It just depends on how it's used, overall, in my opinion.

I would think it'd depend how snarky someone is being
"your whiteknighting really isn't helping the situation" - perhaps not as polite as it could be, I wouldn't consider flaming
"WK;DR" on the other hand...

Yeah, I would say intent is the important thing. People shouldn't be dismissing what would otherwise be good points by accusing them of just whiteknighting, but sometimes somebody really is whiteknighting when they refuse to hear anything and are only coming in from the angle of MY FRIEND IS RIGHT YOU'RE ALL ASSHOLES RAWR.

The no flaming rule can be hard even for the mods to enforce sometimes, but all we can do is our best.

I think the issue of the term "white-knighting" is a particularly tricky one; in my opinion, it's all about the execution. Simply being called a "white knight" in the sarcastic, pejorative sense is insulting, and certainly INCITES anger, which can constitute flaming. However, it can also be seen as calling out a particular behavior which is less subjective than, say, calling someone a "douchebag" or a "jerk".

Regardless, I think one can avoid getting called out for ad hominem when choosing to address someone for "white-knighting" by avoiding the phrase altogether and explaining that the person is clearly defending someone without taking in all the evidence or listening to opposing views.

In a perfect world, this would be very easy. Unfortunately, some of us tend to get a little heated and to ask them to word carefully is definitely an exercise in frustration! Haha. I think I actually do appreciate being reminded of the rules, now and then; it's helping train me to choose my words carefully and think before I speak. Not only does it keep things civil, it encourages honest discourse, which is why I think a lot of the regular posters here follow this community in the first place.
