Buying a fursuit head base, and then taking a commission to fur it to a person's specifications. Acceptable?

I see a lot of people buy head bases, fur them, and then resell them. That seems to be generally okay. I'm wondering if it's acceptable to purchase a head base, and then sell the right to have it furred to a person's specifications.

This would be like buying Van Dyke noses(not making copies via molding aka illegal) and putting them in stuffed animals for resell.

Why would this be a problem?

Remember to always check with the person building the bases as they may not want you to resell.

I work with Chillymouse, who commissions me for head bases to be used in her commissions. I don't really mind. It's sort of a collaboration really. Part of the money she gets from the commissioner goes to me to pay for work making the base.

You bought it and it's yours to do what you want with it. You're not stealing their work and copying it - you paid for the actual item you are reselling. Wether you fur it and sell it or sell it then fur it is irrelevant.

Collaborating on 3D projects is similar to comics. One person is working on one section, and another person works on another section for a specific project (writing, sketching layouts, inking, coloring, page layouts, ect). If you peak here (http://fursuit.livejournal.com/4765534.html), I had about 6 people involved with working on Sunny (3 for the design, 2 on construction, 1 for the nose, and 1 for photography), which includes myself.

I would possibly mention the process, and make sure the head maker knows that's what you were doing as well, but other than that, I don't see a problem.

If your intent from the get-go is to fur + resell, as long as you inform the artist that's what you're doing I don't see an issue. It'd be discourteous to do otherwise and then have them find out later.

Buying something for personal use, wearing it a few times then reselling it because you want something different I imagine is quite different.

I bought the base second-hand. Do you think I should still inform the original creator of the base?

I think it'd be courteous to do so, or at least make a footnote somewhere that someone else made the headbase, and who.

Seems fine to me, but be sure that appropriate credit is given to all collaborators for the final product.

As you seem to know, you're allowed to do almost anything you want to the head base you buy (rights of first sale) so long as you don't duplicate it. Personally I don't see a problem with it, just so long as you're not trying to pull a fast one. You just need to be honest about it, even if you're not shouting to the heavens about it on every page.

The other thing to consider is that as a professional, you need to be able to deliver what your examples look like. This probably means choosing one person to buy a base from and sticking with them. You may be up a creek without a paddle if something happens with them, so be prepared for that.

Well, if it's an unfinished item, I don't see how anyone can have a problem with it being resold. It's like if you bought hand made paper, made a picture and resold it, right?

My likely-to-be-unpopular opinion is that it's pretty cheesy. They're commissioning YOU because they like YOUR work... if they wanted their head to look like some other builder's, they'd just commission that builder!

I'm with you to a point.

I'm not that familiar with this artist (or anyone else in the suiting arena), so I'd be missing name recognition, but for me it's a question of "Is the product what was advertised/agreed upon?" I figure it's a case where sometimes people are better, faster, or just enjoy sewing more, so why not hook up with someone who's better/faster/is having more fun on the sculpting? (not snarky, totally up for discussion)

Right, right. I wouldn't purport it to be our work. It would be very clear that the base wasn't ours. :)

It's a base we bought for cheap with the intent to experiment on it, but because it's a more unusual species, we figured it would be better to offer it as a "we'll customize it and finish it for you" sort of commission. Otherwise, if WE chose the colors and details and things, we worry it won't sell.

It isn't a generic dog/cat, and while we could have sculpted it ourselves, this was just a nice time saver and training exercise/excuse. :D Hopefully that makes sense and explains our intentions a bit. Also, the builder is no longer taking commissions, from what I've heard. :o

Offering up the base to be customized by a buyer is a bit different- I was imagining it would be like someone commissions you for their character's head, and you go commission the base for the custom commission from someone else without their knowledge or approval. That's where I'm uncomfortable.

I think the only problem would be if the person buys a base, furs it, and claims the entire thing are their own work.
If credit is given to the maker of the base that's fine, but otherwise I think it's a really underhanded thing to do.
