Sep. 17th, 2011 12:33 pmWARNING! MANY PICS ARE NSFW! http://itsfurrytime.tumblr.com/
A lot of the art on the gallery is not credited to the original artists, and i do not believe any have given permission.
you can contact support@tumblr.com to ask for it to be removed.
edited for clarification and to add what can be done if you see your art there and want it down.

Kind of an Advice 4 Artists
Date: 2011-09-17 06:40 pm (UTC)There are so many inexperienced kids on Tumblr that, probably, the best idea for artists is to include watermarks/urls in their pictures; that way, if the Tumblr 'thief' doesn't credit, people will still know whom the picture belongs to.

Date: 2011-09-17 06:59 pm (UTC)Yes, I realize artists don't like their work posted without asking, being one myself, but that's what signatures and watermarks are for. On the Internet, sharing communities like Tumblr DO exist, and since they are sharing the work and not claiming it, I would consider it free publicity. The artist is posting these images free online to begin with, and these people are sharing them. In the age of a great many sites to blog, reblog, post, share, etc, you have to realize this is going to happen if you share your work.
Most any artist can do is ask them to delete the post or whatever, but they're not stealing, they're sharing (albeit without the original links, so far as I can see).

Date: 2011-09-17 07:00 pm (UTC)I normally wouldn't mind, they DID link back to the artist (though they don't always, from what I see) - but the picture itself got a bit of flak and I had something akin to a mild panic attack over it. A bit of an over-reaction, yeah, but it's something I really have no control over no matter how stupid the reason is. 9___6 I feel targeted easily, I guess. Herp.
I really dislike tumblrs like this. Not sure there's really anything we can do to stop them, though.

Date: 2011-09-17 07:30 pm (UTC)Also, tumblr is weird. I've seen stuff that's been reblogged, and the source isn't listed anywhere other than the FIRST POST. Sometimes it's a pain in the ass to find that first post because of crappy journal layouts.

Date: 2011-09-17 09:27 pm (UTC)Sometimes, when people reblog images, they remove the text in the caption box because they don't want the clutter on their page. This isn't an issue that the theme blogs should be held accountable for (if they're putting credit on the post to begin with, of course), but it's not something you can stop.
Generally, people who reblog and remove words in the caption box leave the click through or link back in tact.

Date: 2011-09-17 08:23 pm (UTC)Finally there is a recent post addressing the issue: here which specifies that the art can be removed if necessary. However, I'd encourage people to really examine this issue because I don't think it's going away anytime soon.
Personally I view this a little differently than other reuses of the artwork just because the tumblrs are generally just there to pass along artwork recommendations to people they think would like it. If you are concerned about images getting reposted, I'm make a very clear indication on the submission itself that it should not be reposted (while your copyright should include that, it will help clarify things to state it explicitly). However, to save yourself the headache, I'd only worry about it on a handful of images, make it clear that these few cannot be reposted anywhere due to whatever reason the reason is, and if possible, watermark them a lot. It may not be great for viewing them, but if you really want to stop people from reposting, that's your best bet.
The problem is most people reposting on tumblr don't see what they're doing as wrong, because they're not claiming the images of theirs, particularly if relinking them and they're not really gaining anything from reposting, even though the artist might. I think it's easier to respect "Please don't repost or reblog this anywhere due to its sensitive content" or something like that than "Don't repost any of my artwork anywhere under any circumstances." The former will tell someone that this image is off limits for a "good" reason, the second says everything's off limits because the artist is strict, and I'd be more likely to go against the latter - it leaves more room for rationalizing things and it doesn't give me anything I can show off.

Date: 2011-09-17 08:41 pm (UTC)No one is required to ask permission to repost your artwork and, even if you state that you don't wish to have it reposted, no one has to abide by that. This is the downside of posting your art on a public place (or on the internet at all). Frequently, people will have a conniption because there is no visible credit, but the image will have a click through with the image (like finerfur often does).
Also, in regards to those who have put in requests to have their art taken down through the tumblr ask box should be aware that tumblr often eats messages (no one knows why, it just happens sometimes). So there's always a changce that the blog owner simply didn't receive your message.on the other hand, they could just be a jerk.

Date: 2011-09-17 10:26 pm (UTC)It's just not something I get. Somebody makes something and posts it. You like it, and you tell the artist thank you by just kind of taking it and doing whatever you want with it? I don't get it, I guess. Why wouldn't you want to be nice and respectful and ask first when somebody has shown you something you enjoy for free? Artists are being nice enough to share what they make, but you don't have to be nice enough to ask first?
Even in this post, there's a lot of 'Well I'm gonna do what I want and if the artist doesn't like it, piss on them! I'm gonna do it anyway!'. Why? Why would you want to treat the people who make things you enjoy that way?
Don't mind me. It just confuses me that people are so flippant about the feelings of people who do cool things and share that with people.
All that said, this is why I put the URL to my FA gallery on my pictures even though I feel like it detracts from the piece, because people are lazy and don't always credit.

The reason they're so pissed off right now, is because the person running that tumblr, is getting epictons of hatemail, which really doesn't help anyone, except make the artists look like children.

Date: 2011-09-17 10:48 pm (UTC)Copyright infringement is not theft, nor is it considered theft in court. Copyright infringement means taking advantage of the copyright holder's rights without authorization. Theft is taking property and depriving the original owner of it. The original owner isn't being deprived of the art; they still have access to the file. So it's not 'stealing'. The owner of the tumblr has no intention of saying anything that is posted there was created by them, source or no source.

Date: 2011-09-17 11:00 pm (UTC)It's not worth getting flustered over. I've had my art posted online for years and while I wish people would ask, it's the nature of the net. It's best to simply let them share so long as they know whose it is. Being less possessive is far better stress wise.
They aren't taking credit for any of the art, trust me there. I've talked to the owner, and he simply just collects it like E621 does. He will credit if you ask. He respected me enough to listen.
You're being over dramatic, and over possessive. Saying there's a lack of respect here is incredibly insulting - not every artist cares as much as you do about reblogging, and many of us realize it's pretty futile to fight it.
Just let it go, and calm down.

Date: 2011-09-17 11:22 pm (UTC)I completely do understand people should ask first, but when you're so used to how the internet is, it can be difficult to think about asking first, more so when you don't know the original artist in the first place.
I don't reupload artwork randomly. I'll do it if it was done for me and add in who did it. But, if something is already on tumblr and I see my friend re-blogged it, I'll do so. I mean, I don't really feel as if I'm doing something bad by reblogging something already on the site. Especially since there's no way for me to know if the artist gave the original poster permission or not. I'm sure the artst would get annoyed to get 100+ notes about reblogging.
*You seem new to tumblr. Uploading is different then rebloging. Rebloging is basically saying, hey, i like this, look! Same as giving someone a link to it, but it'll show up on your page.

Date: 2011-09-18 02:12 am (UTC)1.) Some people like the free exposures, others don't. It isn't fair to assume that just because some people like it, everyone does.
2.) Believe it or not, some people do like a certain level of anonymity/privacy. Just because they post on FA or even DeviantArt doesn't mean they want their art all over the place.
3.) It's not art theft, nor illegal, but again, the polite thing to do in the situation is to ask, so for future bloggers/tumblurs please ask! It won't do you any harm, and if you're afraid the artist will say no, then go on the safe side and don't post.
4.) If you feel, despite knowing 1, 2, and 3, that you are entitled to repost artwork from any artist at any time without consent, give all possible credit to avoid future problems. And if somebody contacts you wanting their art down, don't take it personally, remember you took it without asking, so they have every single right to ask you to take it down, free exposure or not.
As for artists, I guess sadly we're moving into an age where if you don't watermark your stuff you're going to get it taken, only post stuff on public or even semi public sites that you don't mind being reposted everywhere. Keep everything else behind lock and key, or on personal sites where you can control who sees it and if/how it can be used. If it does get posted, most sites seem fine with stuff being taken down, but others might fight you like crazy ( seen several instances of this) to keep it on their site, so again, I guess only post things you don't mind being taken and re-posted everywhere.
Just kinda' a summation of what I learned today, and advice I'd give soo *shrugs* Take it or leave it I suppose.

Date: 2011-09-18 03:10 am (UTC)it's actually kind of grey-area legal-wise (it IS copyright infringement but most people don't consider it worth the money to pursue) but I think as far as the reality of the situation goes, this is a great means of getting both sides to be respectful as possible.

Date: 2011-09-18 04:03 am (UTC)However, personally, I really would not appreciate it if someone snagged my art and reposted/reblogged it without my permission.
I'm not gonna go throw a hissy fit or have any kittens over it, but I wouldn't really be happy or jumping for joy either.
It isn't really that I'd be worried about them stealing my art, claiming it as their own, or making any kind of profit off of it. It's just, I find it a bit inconsiderate toward the artist to just assume they're cool with you reposting their art. Some are, but not all.
Free publicity, some sort of shout out, or courtesy to the artist would definitely not be the first thing on my mind if I ran across someone reposting my art without my permission. It might come later, considering the situation, but certainly not right off the bat.
Plus, to think of an artist as being "butthurt" because they choose to defend their art, and the argument that if someone doesn't want their art spread around with or without their consent they shouldn't post it at all is really disheartening.
Calling me "butthurt" or throwing the "You posted it publicly, so get over it." argument at me is not going to make me any happier or more understanding to your want to repost my artwork. That kind of attitude, with me personally, would be rather counter productive if someone wished to repost my art or do whatever with it.
Honestly, if someone wanted to reblog my art, recolor one of my lineart drawings, or something along those lines and was considerate enough and polite enough to ask me, 9 times out of 10 (10 out of 10 thus far) I'd be more than happy to grant their request.
I really don't think I'd be very angry if I found they'd done so without my permission, especially if they did credit me, but I would certainly let them know that next time I would be much more appreciative and happier if they asked first instead of just assuming I was an artist who doesn't care or something.
I do realize though, in some situations, it may be hard to find an artist, but really, I hope anyone who is reposting art does all they can to try and track down said artist instead of just finding the art and reposting it immediately. This, and other perhaps obvious reasons, are also why I'm trying to design a decent watermark for my art as well. So if anything, that may be a way to track down an artist or make sure they're given proper credit for their artwork.
Anyway, this was a really interesting post, and I have mixed feelings about some of the comments. However, they all gave me quite a bit to think and reflect on. In the end though, this is just my point of view, so you may take it or leave it.
