[identity profile] kayla-la.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] artists_beware
This is an announcement that we are tweaking two rules, outlined below:

1. From this announcement forward, tracing and art theft posts will fall under our usual 'no proxy' blanket rule. This means an involved party will need to be the person who posts the beware, whether it be a purchaser or the artist whose work was stolen/copied. Be aware that the 'must be transaction related' rule still applies to art theft posts, and that you can always take your proxy art theft posts to [livejournal.com profile] art_theft.

2. All Paypal addresses and real life names should be censored when you submit screencaptures, pending our best judgment in specific cases. Previously, we manually checked to see if this information was publicly available, but we have decided censoring them from the start would be a better direction.

Thank you for reading!

Just for sake of clarity regarding rule change #2 :
If the Paypal addresses and or real life names are publicly displayed by the user being posted; they should still be censored in all screen-captures regardless, correct?

Correct.

There may end up being certain cases where we'd allow publicly available names/emails to go uncensored but there would need to be a solid reason for it, which probably wouldn't come up too often anyways. But yeah, we're defaulting to asking these to be censored from now on.

I only see the real name being needed when someone does commissioning via ONLY their real name and not a fandom name.

Yeah, that's pretty much how it'll go.

What if someone is known to switch fandom nicknames very often, perhaps with the explicit purpose of avoiding their reputation as a bad customer and/or artist to do business with?

I can't really give a solid answer without a specific case to chew on but usually those who try and hide by jumping user names, don't post IRL names or paypal emails publicly anyway, which forced us to have that info censored in paypal screenshots even before the rule change. If they have it listed publicly though, people can see it by looking at the galleries/userpages. We'll also continue to do try and keep the tags updated to connect the new usernames to the old ones.

Mostly this new rule is in place to cut back on how much time it takes for us to dig around to see if something needs censoring or not. Doing that was a real time sink.

But yeah, there will still likely be times when some of the IRL names/emails that are given out on userpages may be let through if it holds weight in the beware itself, but that will have to be done on a case by case basis.

Edit: D'oh! Dani is faster at answering than I am. Sorry for the extra word mountain! :)

These are reasonable and do not promote WTFery. Thank you.

I don't think art_theft is active any more, tried to join the group last year so I could report someone directly stealing art(not a trace a direct upload up the other persons art and saying they did it) but I was never accepted.

It is an active community. Unfortunately the moderation team are the ones whom have disappeared. One could always appeal to live journal to be given ownership of the comm, but so far no one's stepped up.

What about censoring out all except their initials? Should not be enough for ID theft, particularly if you entirely censor out their location, but helps others potentially dealing with the same person whom might be operating under a new nick to recognize if they're dealing with someone others might be unknowingly entering risky business with?

Hi, we decide on censoring on a case by case basis sometimes. Please feel free to see your rejection notice. If you don't receive it, please let me know and I can PM it to you.
