[identity profile] cerari.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] artists_beware
First time posting here, but after stumbling onto this user's journal I thought a heads up to this community might not be a bad idea.

User is JinDragonWolf (http://www.furaffinity.net/user/jindragowolf/) - they posted a journal about how they may cancel their current commissions since they have been taking so long and "not feeling up to them", and then start over with higher prices to get a Wacom. Oh, and they can't afford to give refunds at this time either.

Journal : http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1357331/

Screencap of the journal under the cut :

If I made any errors in posting this, please let me know! I checked the community info and don't think I broke any rules...

You know I can understand wanting a new tablet and not having any money and wanting to take commissions to be able to get one.. But for goodness sakes.. At least if you're gonna cancel commissions, take the new ones and pay back the ones you canceled FIRST before you buy yourself a new shiny toy. That or just buckle down and complete the others before taking new ones and THEN get your tablet. Ugh I hate people that do stuff like this.

But yeah that's just my opinion.

Seems that he deleted his journal. Let's see if he tries to do it again. o_O

To pay those by taking in new income is called a ponzi scam.

It is, but it is slightly, just slightly, more redeeming then what they are doing now. But yeah, you're right a scam regardless.

Wait, how is it a scam? if new people get their art and old ppl get their money... :/

Because you're forcing someone into a loan. You are saying you can't have your art or your money till whenever I feel like paying you back, but if you want you can spend more than you already did to possibly get some art. That they very well might do the same thing on. It's shady, really shady.

No, I mean.

Person A cancels commission on person b, for whatever reason, but takes a second commission for person C. Person A cannot pay back person b with available funds, so pays person b back with the funds from person c's commission, and does indeed complete the commission.

IDK...

They should refund what is outstanding FIRST. Priorities! Unless its okay with the commissioners they are canceling, they should be their first concern.

What I am saying, though, is if you do not have the money to pay someone back with and have to take a new commission to do it, who the hell gives a flying fuck so long as both parties get what they deserve, ie refund and art. :/

But they never said they intended in paying the original customers back with the money from the new ones. They just said they will get to it when they can and are going to take new commissions to buy a new tablet.

Also how would you feel if someone canceled your commission, couldn't pay you back, then opened commissions so they could buy something for themselves? I know I'd be upset. Not only am I not getting the art that I've already had to wait for, but now I don't even know when I'm getting my money back. And if I really still wanted the art, I'd have to pay even MORE to get what I should have gotten in the first place?

The artist should have talked to his commissioners gave them a choice of waiting for a refund, or just wait it out on the art, vs making a post saying how much they really don't give a shit about the people that have outstanding orders.

Yes, but I'm not talking about HIM at this point, I've given you a scenario. :/ Since apparantly that would be a scam too.

I wouldn't be commissioning furry art anyway, so I guess I don't have to worry about that.

From: [identity profile] blackberrypie.livejournal.com
Not just furries that pull this stuff too, seen plenty of people pull crap on DA that has nothing to do with furries. :P

And even if not talking about him, my middle point still stands. I'd still be pissed. Why is my commission any less important than someone else's? I know if I knew the situation I wouldn't want to get anything from them no matter how great the art was, because they could turn around and do the same thing at any point again. Saying and doing are completely different things.

Let me put it this way;

I don't commission people who do art 'as a hobby'. If I commission someone (rarely) I commission people who do art for a living, like I do.

That's fine. That's your opinion. :O I can think of a number of reasons that that sort of thing might happen and be appropriate so.

I donno, I see it as they shouldn't have even used the money because the product hasn't been created yet. The money was not theirs to use until it was.

But yeah, like you said opinion.

If you have ever done art for a living, you'd know that isn't always possible, especially if you aren't the 'popular' furry artist who gets commissions out the wazoo. Bills need to be paid.

I have, and I do know. But I actually try and complete things that have been paid for. Instead of pretending that commissioners are a bank and I'm just getting loans.

If I do need to just use the funds, I say I need funds for x, so that way people are in the loop.

With that said, I actually need to get off the net and work on one now! :)

It seems to make little sense to be doing NEW commissions so she can "have the money to pay someone back" when jindragowolf could just as easily do the art agreed upon in the first place. With the original commissioners.

It's all art, she was paid to draw pieces for four(?) people. If she can't refund them without taking on more work then she should just do the art, up her prices and move on.

I'm not sure if I'm getting my point across, but it seems like a bit of a slap in the original commissioners' faces.

It doesn't make much sense, sure, but if it ends up working out, fine.

After all, in a different situation, if I were to take a commission for someone, have to pay bills with that money, and find myself harassed by the customer, who knows, I might have to do just that!

But it's different if the customer is somehow acting unusual and, basically, breaching a contract (Even if it's an unwritten social one) than if you just felt like you wanted more money, which means the artist would be breaching their contract. yaknow?
