Post-Commission Survey?

Hello, a_b!

I have begun taking commissions more regularly lately, and I was considering requesting that my commissioners fill out an optional, public post-commission survey after I complete their orders. I intend to use the survey as a means to judge my progress and improve my craft, in addition to providing references for future commissioners to assess me by, but I've got a few questions:

• For those of you that use, or have used, a post-commission survey, have you found it to be beneficial or is it generally not worth the hassle?
• What questions should I ask, in general?
• Are there better alternatives to LiveJournal for hosting the survey, while still allowing anonymous contributions?

I haven't used a post-commission survey of any kind, but if you're looking for an anonymous way to get survey responses - Survey Monkey (http://www.surveymonkey.com/) is a great place to do so. :)

I put it up in a journal rather than asking people to fill it out just after their commission has been delivered. I want people to feel comfortable telling me of any concerns they might have had. I got a lot of feedback and points of improvement. :)

The important thing is to make people feel like they can truly tell you something. Asking them to fill something out directly after their commission is delivered may make them feel like they would be too easily identifiable if they had a bad experience.

yeah, I understand. It does seem more inviting to request that people fill out the survey over a journal rather than asking them directly. I haven't decided quiet yet how to handle it all, but I will probably take that approach first and see how it goes.

An online survey site would probably better serve you than LJ.

I wouldn't use a survey like that as references and feedback, since either people give the generic A++++THANKS response, or they take it seriously and your feedback looks "bad" to those trained to expect those "~++A++~~" ebay ratings. I personally wouldn't leave truly honest feedback if I feel it would hurt your business unless the experience was REALLY bad which in the end might give you a false sense of where you are at. I feel either the survey is your references, or it's honest feedback but it's a very difficult game for it to be both.
