[identity profile] rosequoll.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] artists_beware
I've got to make my first post here, because I'm bluntly appalled at the nerve of someone that I've been dealing with tonight.

I was offered a 1GB CompactFlash card (Lexar, good quality) by [livejournal.com profile] mix_hyenataur in exchange for some fursuit items. He claimed that the card was worth over $100-170 and that he wanted a trade equal to that amount with a discount. I looked up the cost online and I can currently purchase that *exact card* for $95, which I informed him, and offered him $115 worth of fursuit items and free shipping in trade for the card, which I think is more than generous.

I was told that I only cared about myself, that I should appreciate the "thought that counts" and that I wasn't losing money so why should it matter.

Just a warning, to any professional artists out there or people who run respectable businesses. I'm going to suggest steering far clear of this guy. He obviously does not respect the work that goes into what we do, and feels that he should get more than he's "paying" for.

Not worth the time, so there's a warning in advance for you.

Edit: I should add that he told me I charged too much (which in honesty, I charge less than or equal to most, and it works out to a horrible hourly rate, honestly) and that if he made the offer to anyone else they'd appreciate his generosity and jump at the offer.

=/

The simple fact of the matter is that any item for sale is worth what people are prepared to pay for it.

Rose wasn't prepared to pay (or work to the value of) that much for an item she could get far cheaper on the internet. That's her right both as an artist and as a free human being. She doesn't owe anyone any discounts. To lash out at her for that was unreasonable.

I was replying in part to her 'discount' that was being offered, hoping I could get in part. She didn't seem interested because I didn't fill her quota. I was disapointed because I was trying to help her out on my end, and she refused the discount at first because I didn't ofer her a camera as well.

"You're CF card only balanced the total price out to an even hundred. The deal was for the whole package."

...which was never stated in the original description.

If you had a real issue with what Rose was doing, the best idea would have either been to walk away and give your money to a different artist, or, if you felt the infraction was serious enough, post here and see what the community thought about the situation.

However, at a guess, I'd say the general response would have been "It's her right not to take on any trade she doesn't want to." Now, had she taken on the trade, inconvenienced you and/or had you send the card and then backed out, THAT'S unfair. But two people disagreeing on a business principle and going their seperate ways without working together happens all the time. It's not worth getting upset about.

Then why is this thread here?

Because I hold sentimental/original value over things (never-used) that I work my butt off over to get?

NO. It's because you INSULTED Rose when she decided to back out of the deal. This is what you fail to understand.

Had you shrugged your shoulders and walked away, she'd never have posted about you here in the first place. You catch more flies with honey, mate. Go off your brain every time someone disagrees with you and Bad Things will happen. I'm sure you've started to notice.
