Never thought I would post here! This is the most amazing epic debacle I've ever seen in my life, and I need some advice. Technically I got burned out of money I was supposed to be paid, but more importantly at this point an entire convention of people are being burned out of money. I would like to leave names out for now, I don't want to put people on blast but I can later depending on what happens.
Can someone open a paypal dispute on an intangible object they paid for past the dispute period, like 9 months ago? If it's a large group of people *100-200 people* that open up a dispute at the same time will it freeze their paypal or will it not matter because they bought tickets in some cases a very long time ago. The fear is them taking all the money and running and the goal is to stop it.
The deal is a convention that was supposed to be happening next weekend was cancelled. A week ago. How/why/who was at fault for the cancellation is up to interpretation. The fact is they didn't fill the room block the said they would. Eventually I will encourage everyone involved to post an A_B on these people for the sake of future dealers/artists/attendees.
Any advice I can take to these poor people who I'm pretty sure will have to fight tooth and nail to see any money back would be really appreciative.

Date: 2012-05-25 01:56 am (UTC)You need to contact Paypal and let them know the story (i.e you paid for use of space at an event that never happened, and no refund was given), calling will help get that done faster. If you can get a few people to all bring this up, Paypal will look into it as a whole.
That really sucks, hoping you guys can get every cent back.

Date: 2012-05-25 03:35 am (UTC)Make a nice list of names and contact info (their paypal email at least) and the money they each lost, yourself included.
Then, give paypal a phone call and inform them of what happened.
"There was this person who blah blah blah the convention/stuff we paid for was never provided blah blah blah there are [X number] persons besides myself who are missing roughly [X money] combined, I have a list if that would help, the person ran with the money, can we open a mass-dispute? What should we do blah blah blah."
Be ready to contact every person so that they also call/contact paypal if that's what is required to proceed.

Date: 2012-05-25 08:10 am (UTC)Also on the paperwork, did it have any mention of what happens in the event of cancellation of the convention?

Date: 2012-05-25 01:30 pm (UTC)As far as the attendees are concerned, the convention has actually shut down their website. But what used to be on the rules page was
"Refunds will be given up until April 23rd, 2012. After April 23rd, 2012 NO refunds will be given, no exceptions.
Full refunds will be available up to 60 days after the date of purchase provided that it is not past April 23rd, 2012."
And they cancelled the convention on may 17th with the convention this weekend. That's what makes me think they did it on purpose. They had to have known this was gonna happen.
I'm gonna try and contact everyone over the next 3 days and give paypal time to work and then talk lawsuit. I think if the chairs see the people organize they will work harder to prevent any further losses. Right now I think they are probably thinking all of these people will just give up.

Date: 2012-05-25 02:13 pm (UTC)I think you could do with legal help on it if you can get it, esp with that no refund agreement. I don't know what the convention was or what your money was towards but if it was art related, then there are some place that do free legal help for artists-
http://www.starvingartistslaw.com/help/volunteer%20lawyers.htm
http://moolelo.net/2012/01/11/free-legal-services-for-artists-and-arts-organizations/
http://www.law-arts.org/
If it wasn't art related there may be some other places that offer something similar (i'm afraid I don't know any off the top of my head ^^)

Date: 2012-06-08 06:52 pm (UTC)Information has been sparse from the remaining people (person now I guess) involved. The problem is....my hands are tied. I really shouldn't have said anything at all about the situation and in hindsight I should have not put them on blast like this if I wasn't willing to lay down some solid evidence. I was just really dumb and angry (40 hours making badges will do that). Maybe I can turn these 3 thousand badges into a cool art installation or a chandelier for my bedroom. I doubt they will ever pay for them. I will try my best to make something positive out of this and this post was at least helpful to bring my brain back into reality about it all.

Date: 2012-06-09 01:53 am (UTC)I can tell you that the con-chair is planning on going to a large Texas anime con this month, and I worry that her refusal to address this situation before this next con will be very detrimental to her. You put in a lot of time and effort into a con that never took place, and I can understand your frustration and anger about the situation. I do think that if the situation isn't resolved, it might be a good idea to release the name of the con. As for the thousands of badges that are still in your position, I'd be interested to see what you come up with to utilize them.

Date: 2012-06-10 03:13 pm (UTC)I don't know why she chose to fire her entire staff. Firing the entire staff doesn't take their name off contracts. I don't know how she made it through that certain Texas convention without being burned at the stake. I guess that there is either enough people that care about her or enough people who don't care at all. I also know she is a good person. Sending out sporadic e-mails to artists and attendees at random isn't really cutting it, or trying to stall everyone into not asking for their money back. Whatever.

Date: 2012-10-03 06:23 am (UTC)If you do happen to know any artists, dealers or attendees that haven't filed their paperwork with the attorney general hit up the Facebook page or note me for emails. I know they read this and they know who I am, that's fine. I'm not here to start drama.

Date: 2012-10-03 03:22 pm (UTC)Either way I wouldn't have access to lists of dealers and artists still owed money because that information wasn't really released to me. It's funny tho even other local conventions are getting blowback from this. They have had to come out and be like hey, we weren't involved in this!
